Management

Mr. David Gordon

Chief Executive Officer & Director

David has over 15 years of progressive management experience leading enterprise scale projects in Medical Technology, Information Technology, Energy, Real Estate, Utilities, and Financial Products for public and private companies such as Enbridge Inc., Suncor Energy, the City of Calgary, and more than a dozen small cap public companies.

His acumen in financial reporting, analytics, and key drivers to generate value, combined with management of people, processes, and resources, position him as a key executive for firms navigating growth and change, and seeking performance optimization. Mr. Gordon has developed strategies and tactics at the C-suite level, and then managed implementation to attain the results. Examples include turnarounds, restructurings, start-ups, employee re-sizing and relocations, facilities, and sales/marketing plans. He has co-managed a $3.0 BN North American equity fund, and he has raised over $100M in public and private capital syndicates for various SMEs and middle market companies, including during his time as an investment banker with CIBC. Mr. Gordon holds a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation and a Project Management Professional (PMP) designation. He earned a degree in Business Commerce from the University of Calgary in 2003. 

Dr. Christoph W. Sensen

Chief Scientific Officer & Director

A founding member of CNA Diagnostics Inc., Dr. Sensen is a University Professor for Computational Biotechnology at the Graz University of Technology in Austria and an Adjunct Professor at the University of Calgary’s Faculty of Medicine, Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. He participated in several large-scale Genome Research programs, including two for the development of markers for CWD and BSE, and co-Author on more than 100 peer-reviewed articles and has edited or published six books in the field of Genome Research and Bioinformatics.  Dr. Sensen is a reviewer for granting agencies and Journals; and Associate Editor for Genomics & Bioinformatics for Journal Biotechnology.

Previously he worked for seven years as a Research Officer at the National Research Council of Canada’s Institute for Marine Biosciences (NRC-IMB) and as a visiting scientist at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) in Heidelberg (13 months). He studied Biology in Mainz, Düsseldorf and Cologne and obtained a Dr. rer. nat. degree from the University of Cologne in 1994.

Dr. Jung Soh

Chief Information Officer

Dr. Soh has a deep understanding of the development of bioinformatics pipelines, administration of bioinformatic computing infrastructure, and design and execution of data-driven decision making tools. He is involved specifically in the application of bioinformatics to molecular diagnostics.  Dr. Soh teaches on state-of-the-art bioinformatics tools, scripting for biology, and transcriptomics. Previously Dr. Soh was a Research Associate at the University of Calgary, where he developed bioinformatics algorithms and NGS analysis pipelines in multiple projects on cancer genomics, environmental bacterial genomics, hydrocarbon metagenomics, fungal gene prediction, plant transcriptomics, virtual reality visualization of medical data, and genome visualization. Dr. Soh received his Ph.D. and his M.S in computer science from the University at Buffalo, the State University of New York. Previously he received his B.S. in electrical and computer engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Dr. Greg Andrews

Chairman, Director

Dr. Andrews is an Equine Veterinarian who has practiced in the Calgary area for 35 years. Until recently he was the CEO of Moore Equine Veterinary Centre, which is the largest equine practice in Canada. He was past President of the Alberta Veterinary Medical Association, the Western Canadian Association of Equine Practitioners, as well as involvement with the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association and Equine Canada. Greg has served on the advisory boards of the University of Calgary School of Veterinary Medicine and the Western College of Veterinary Medicine in Saskatoon. His business experience includes positioning Moore Equine to purchase several veterinary clinics in Alberta as well as expanding the practice within the Calgary area.

Dr. Andrews currently chairs the Board of Directors of Inova Partners LLP, a successful veterinary software and management company that services large, complex veterinary practices worldwide which is centered out of Alberta and Texas.  He also has been on the boards of small public oil and gas companies and presently has business interests in that industry. Greg received the ICD.D designation from the Institute of Corporate Directors after participating in the Directors Education program of the Rotman School of Business.

Mr. Todd Wallach

Director

Mr. Wallach has over 30 years of experience in life sciences, corporate development and intellectual property licensing.

He is a successful life sciences entrepreneur and seasoned senior executive in Biotechnology, Pharmaceuticals and Devices/Diagnostics, and has started and built companies with total market capitalization of >$2B, raised over $75M in capital and has multiple exits with strong return.

Mr. Wallach is currently President and CEO of Evogen Inc., and was previously CEO of Molecular Detection Inc. At Molecular Detection, he built an international diagnostics company targeting infectious diseases, focusing on determination of pathogen identification and antibiotic resistance.  Todd secured and built a leading intellectual property portfolio, including securing patents in a very challenging environment for biomarkers, and successfully launched and distributed proprietary diagnostic products worldwide.

Mr. Wallach is a board member to several Therapeutics, Medtech, and Digital Health IT companies, and is a member of the life sciences investment committee of Ben Franklin Technology Partners.  Additionally, he is a former member of the Institutional Review Board for high-risk Clinical Trials at the University of Pennsylvania.

Dr. G. Kee Jim

Director

Dr. Jim received his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (D.V.M.) in 1983 from the Western College of Veterinary Medicine, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.  He is the founding partner of Feedlot Health Management Services Ltd. (FHMS), and the 2008 recipient of the American Association of Bovine Practitioner’s Practitioner of the Year award.  Dr. Jim is also a past recipient of the American Association of Bovine Practitioner’s Beef Award for Excellence in Veterinary Preventative Medicine, the Schering-Plough Animal Health Veterinary Award from the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association, and the Canadian Animal Health Institute Leadership Award. Dr. Jim is currently the CEO and Managing Director of Feedlot Health Management Services Ltd. Kee Jim’s companies, G.K Jim Farms and affiliated companies Cattlinc Inc, Silverado Cattle Inc., Taweel Cattle Company Ltd., Korova Feeders Ltd., and Diamond Feeders are major players in the Canadian and United States cattle industries through ownership of cows, backgrounding cattle, grass cattle and feedlot cattle.

In addition, Dr. Jim has served on the board of directors of several beef industry groups including the Alberta Cattle Feeders’ Association, Canadian Cattlemen’s Association, Livestock Identification Services Ltd, Canadian Cattle Identification Agency, Canada Beef Export Federation and the Alberta Livestock and Meat Agency.  He has also served as Board Chair of the Canada Beef Export Federation and Vice Chairman of the Alberta Cattle Feeder’s Association. 

Mr. Grant Howard

Director

Mr. Howard founded Capital Markets Advisory and Communications firm, The Howard Group in 1988. He is also President and owner of Accolade Capital, General Partner for the Insight Limited Partnership II, which invests in small and micro public companies and some private technology entities. 

He served as a director of Solana Resources for 10 years until it merged with Gran Tierra Energy in late 2008, creating a Columbia focused energy company with a market cap of $750 million that subsequently rose to a high of $2 billion.

Grant was a 5 year member of the Advisory Committee to the Bissett School of Management at Mount Royal University in Calgary, Alberta, a former director of the Calgary Angel Network and served on a number of charitable organizations.

Prior to forming The Howard Group, he enjoyed a multifaceted ten-year career as a television and radio journalist and seven years as a crisis communications and media advisor with his long-term clients including the Calgary City Police and the XV Winter Olympics Organizing Committee.

Mr. Dennis L. Nerland, QC 

Director

Mr. Nerland received his Bachelor of Science Degree with honors in Economics and Mathematics from the University of Calgary in 1975. Further pursuing his education, he received his Master of Arts Degree in Economics from Carleton University in Ottawa, Ontario in 1976 and finally, his Juris Doctorate from the University of Calgary in 1979. Mr. Nerland has completed the Rotman/ Haskayne Directors Education Program and achieved the designation of Institute-Certified Director (ICD.D) from the Institute of Corporate Directors in 2011. He successfully completed the Rotman Financial Literacy Program and has received the TEP designation from the Society of Trust and Estate Planners (STEP). In 2014, and was appointed a Queen’s Counsel (QC) of Alberta. Mr. Nerland is presently a director and trustee of a significant number of private financial businesses and trusts. In addition to this he is currently, and has previously been, a director of numerous public companies listed on the TSX Venture Exchange and the Toronto Stock Exchange.

His professional memberships include: The Law Society of Alberta, The Calgary Bar Association, The Canadian Tax Foundation, The Canadian Bar Association, The Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners, and The Institute of Corporate Directors, Institute-Certified Director, ICD.D.

Dr. David Chalack

Chair, Scientific Advisory Board

Dr. Chalack currently holds the position of international sales manager with Alta Genetics Inc. based in Balzac, Alberta, and is owner/partner and president of Rocky Mountain Holsteins Ltd. Dr. Chalack is past Chairman of the Board of Alberta Livestock and Meat Agency (ALMA); is a past chairman of the board for the Calgary Exhibition and Stampede. He chairs the ministerial advisory board of the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and is a director for Horse Racing Alberta and a member of the Dean’s Advisory Council for the University of Calgary Faculty of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Chalack is a member of the Canadian Institute of Corporate Directors and has recently been appointed to the board of the Canadian Dairy Network (CDN).

In addition to his 25 years with Alta Genetics Inc., Dr. Chalack practiced veterinary medicine as a partner at Moore & Co. Veterinary Clinic, with a focus on large animal medicine, bovine health, and reproduction management.  Dr. Chalack has adopted the One Health Initiative in his work, which is a worldwide strategy for collaboration in advancing the health of humans, animals, and the environment to encourage sustainability. Dr. Chalack holds a Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from the University of Saskatchewan and attended the University of Alberta’s Faculty of Agriculture. As recognition for many years spent advancing Canadian agriculture domestically and internationally, Dr. Chalack was inducted into the Canadian Agricultural Hall of Fame in 2011.

Dr. Robert Sherwin

Scientific Advisory Board

Dr. Robert Sherwin is the Clinical Research Director for Sinai Grace Department of Emergency Medicine and serves as the Chief Science Officer of ResearchOne at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan.  He has extensive clinical research experience in the fields of sepsis, resuscitation, emergency medicine, shock, hyperbaric medicine and hemodynamic monitoring. Throughout his career, he has received funding from numerous sources including the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan Foundation, the Department of Defense (DoD), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and industry. He is extremely well published and has lectured nationally and internationally on infectious disease, sepsis and many other topics. Dr. Sherwin’s most current focus involves early assessment of patients with severe sepsis utilizing machine intelligence systems to identify those at highest risk for inpatient clinical deterioration and death. This research line was supported by the AHRQ and was presented by Dr. Sherwin as a plenary presentation at the American College of Emergency Physicians 2018 Scientific Assembly in San Diego, California. He has most recently been accepted as the Primary Investigator representing Wayne State University for the prestigious Prevention and Early Treatment of Acute Lung Injury (PETAL) Network, which will be focusing on early detection and early treatment of sepsis and critical illness. 

Dr. Sean Bagshaw

Dr. Sean M. Bagshaw is Professor and Staff Intensivist, Department of Critical Care Medicine, Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada. Dr. Bagshaw received his medical doctorate at the University of Calgary (1997-2000). He completed Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada specialty training in Internal Medicine (2000-2003) and in Critical Care Medicine (2003-2005) at the University of Calgary. Dr. Bagshaw also completed a Masters of Science in Epidemiology in the Department of Community Health Sciences, University of Calgary (2003-2005). Dr. Bagshaw completed a fellowship in Critical Care Medicine/Critical Care Nephrology at the Austin Hospital, affiliated with the University of Melbourne, in Melbourne Australia (2005-2007). He has research expertise in epidemiology, clinical trials and health services research. His research focuses on health outcome evaluation, ICU organization and capacity, acute kidney injury, technological organ support, critical illness in vulnerable populations (e.g., elderly, frail), and end-of-life care. He has published over 350 peer-reviewed papers (h-index 76) and has received over $45 million in research funding support. 

Dr. Gary Clark

Scientific Advisory Board

Dr. Clark is a mathematical and statistical expert with +40 years experience including progressive clinical operational responsibilities in oncology, with a focus in biostatistics, clinical data management, statistical programming, clinical operations and systems, and medical writing.  He has participated in the FDA approval of advanced non-small lung cancer and advanced pancreatic cancer therapies. Dr. Clark’s was a faculty member at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, Baylor College of Medicine/Breast Center and the University of Texas Health Center, San Antonio Department of Medicine/Oncology. Dr. Clark is one of the 100 most published breast cancer researchers.

Mr. Lyle Middendorf

Scientific Advisory Board

Mr. Middendorf is a scientific instrumentation expert with +40 years experience at LI-COR Inc., bringing expertise in engineering, marketing, research and development, of scientific instrumentation to Scientific Advisory Board. LI-COR designs, manufactures, and markets instruments for biological and environmental research globally, and provided, for example, the automated DNA sequencing machines used by scientists mapping the human genome. Mr. Middendorf is an electrical engineer by training and presently serves as the CTO of medical devices at LI-COR. He is well published on fluorescence and its use in diagnostics.

Dr. Keith Richter

Scientific Advisory Board

Dr. Richter is a small animal veterinarian with +30 years of experience and is nationally recognized for his interests in gastroenterology and liver disease. He is the founder of the Veterinary Specialty Hospital of San Diego, a co-founder of Ethos Veterinary Health, and serves as the Chief Applied Sciences Officer of Ethos Veterinary Health with a focus to build the Ethos Diagnostic Science laboratory division. Dr. Richter has authored several scientific articles and textbook chapters and lectures frequently nationally and internationally. He has collaborated with gastroenterology programs at the Boston University School of Medicine, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, UC San Diego Medical Center and Scripps Memorial Hospital. Dr. Richter is on the Board of Regents of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine.
